A respected figure among the Mountain Cahuilla, Gacazio Cabazon was one of several Native leaders in the 1800s who helped guide his people through one of the most turbulent times in California’s history. A man of diplomacy, wisdom, and enduring influence, he stood at the crossroads of tradition and colonial transformation.
Gacazio Cabazon was a leader of the Mountain Cahuilla, one of the three primary divisions of the Cahuilla people, whose ancestral lands span much of Riverside County, from the San Gorgonio Pass to the Coachella Valley and beyond. As a net (chief) or headman, he held responsibility not just for his clan or band, but for maintaining harmony with other tribal leaders, protecting his people, and negotiating peace during a time of increasing pressure from colonizers, missionaries, and military forces.
